May I become your lover? This world has become too big to get people to talk.
Really, the new cultural initiative taken by the academic authorities of my university has stimulated my fancy and imagination quite highly! I was used to the idea of being "a lover of words," but the idea of looking for a native lover in order to become proficient in the target language has made me somewhat delirious for a while! I praise my university for this good humoured and well-intended initiative, hoping that many prosperous and fruitful academic liaisons of all sorts will produce the positive results in learning and research we all dare expect! I hope my strip contribution make you smile. You may also have a look at the Euphoria classics, by David Lodge!
Now, being serious for a moment, it is an undeniable fact that an open, friendly and constructive attitude aiming at actual communication and interaction with the members of one linguistic community is the best way to become proficient in their language. A learning process based only on utility or convenience is always defective, as the specialised literature has noted once and again. Good humour should help in the process of breaking the linguistic barriers and spreading culture and tolerance. Learning languages is fun. It is also a symptom of social maturity, something we must look after very tenderly in moments of social and economic instability. Let's wish everybody plenty of love and conversational practice then!
